Arrive in Yangon where you are met by the local guide and transferred to your deluxe hotel to rest and recuperate before exploring the city on your own space
Burma’s largest city, Yangon has always captivated visitors. A compelling fusion of Victorian architecture, lush gardens, busy markets and Buddhist temples, the city still holds much allure. Discover its main highlights on your sightseeing tour today, including the 46-metre-high golden Sule Pagoda, the long reclining Buddha at Chaukhtatgyi Pagoda, and the fascinating National Museum. Also, visit Bogyoke Aung San Market, previously known as Scott Market, to browse some of its 2,000 stalls hawking all kinds of exotic handicrafts.
This morning, fly to Bagan, or the ‘City of Four Thousand Pagodas’ for it ancient temple ruins. Explore its celebrated temples, including the 11th century Schwezigon Pagoda, whose bell shape was replicated in virtually all of the country’s later temples. Admire the mural coated Gubyaukhyi Temple at Wetkyi-Inn, the gold-towered Ananda Pahto, where four gigantic standing Buddhas face north, east, south and west, the Manuha Temple, and the exquisite Shwesandaw Pagoda. Continue to a lacquer ware workshop to see how this decorative art is created and watch a magical sunset from a pagoda terrace to end your memorable day.
Today, travel through rural landscapes and hamlets to Mount Popa, a volcanic mountain topped by a monastery. Ascend the stairs to the top and absorb epic views over the countryside. Afterwards, return to Bagan and use the rest of the day to explore or relax as you please.
Catch a flight to Mandalay and check in at your hotel for two nights. The hub of Myanmar’s culture, this modern metropolis was the capital of the last independent Burmese kingdom. Get a flavor of its personality and architecture on an intriguing sightseeing tour. Visit the beautiful Mahamuni Pagoda, home to a revered, gold-leaf coated Buddha. You will also see the magnificent, teak monastery of Shwenandaw Kyaung and Kuthodaw Pagoda. Here, marvel at the ‘world’s largest book’ - 729 marble slabs inscribed with miniscule texts. Later, climb up Mandalay Hill for stunning panoramas over the city and temple-dotted countryside.
Delve into Myanmar’s rich history with visits to three former royal capitals. Start at atmospheric 18th-19th century Amarapura and time at its Mahagandayon Monastery, where monks and novices line up to receive daily alms. Next, visit Sagaing, to see some of its 600 legendary temples. From here, head to Inwa for a horsecart ride and time at the teakwood Monastery of Bagaya Kyaung, and other sacred sites. End your day, back to Amarapura to enjoy the sunset from the iconic U Bein Bridge.
Today, fly to Heho and drive to Pindaya, known for its hill caves housing 8,000 or more Buddha images. Explore the main cavern to see the crowds of statues carved from everything from alabaster to cement. Continue to the Buddha-filled Shwe U Min Pagoda, built within a stunning cave, before calling at a local market and fascinating paper umbrella workshop.
Leave Pindaya today for an overnight stay on the banks of Inle Lake. Cocooned in hills and dotted with the stilted villages of the Intha people, this beautiful expanse of water will entrance you with its timeless serenity. Enjoy a memorable boat ride, visiting its Floating Gardens, a bustling market and a village. Later, visit the Paung Daw Oo Pagoda and Inn Paw Khon Village, to see its lotus and silk-weaving workshops. Also, visit the stilted Monastery of Nga Phe Chaung, whose Buddhist monks have trained cats to jump through hoops.
Take a boat ride to a stairway at the edge of Inle Lake, which leads to the hidden ruins of Indein's ancient temples and pagodas. The site consists of hundreds of small moss-covered stupas in a jungle-like setting. Some stupas are in a crumbling, deteriorated state, yet ornate stucco carvings of mythical animals and celestial beings can still be seen on some parts. Depart Inle Lake and transfer to Heho where you board a flight back to Yangon. Transfer to the hotel upon arrival.
